Academic Writing Workshop: Effective Academic Writing -Pros and Con
The postgraduate program of the Faculty of Economics and Business at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held an Academic Writing Workshop on August 19, 2023. This activity had the theme “Effective Academic Writing: Pros and Con”. The speaker in this event is Assoc. Prof. Salami Monsurat Ayojimi., PhD (Associate Professor at the Department of Real Estate Development Management Faculty of Applied Sciences Ankara University, Turkiye) that moderated by Nur Hidayah, Ph.D (former Head of Islamic Banking Master Program).
She explained how to choose the right journal to publish our research articles. She also explained that authors must be able to detect predatory journals, fake journals, and cloning journals. There are several ways of detecting predatory journals, fake journals, and cloning journals.
This activity aims to improve the ability to write scientific articles for postgraduate students. So that it is hoped that the output target of postgraduate student publications can be achieved.
Academic Writing Workshop Series 3: How to Find an Appropriate Methods and Present the Result
In a scientific article, finding the right and up-to-date method is important. In addition, the empirical findings found need to be presented systematically. Based on this, the topic raised on the third day of the Academic Writing Workshop Series (16 August 2023) is how to find the right method and present empirical findings.
The third series of this workshop presented competent speakers from Sebelas Maret University (UNS), namely Putra Pamungkas, M.RECH., Ph.D. He is an alumni of Universite de Limoges, France. This third series was moderated by Dr. Nofrianto, M.Ag (Head of Islamic Economic Master Program). On this occasion, he conveyed some of the latest methods that postgraduate students can use in the preparation of both thesis and dissertation research. In addition, he also explained how to present empirical findings which must be followed by an in-depth analysis.
Based on a survey conducted with participants regarding feedback on this activity. 56% of respondents said they were very satisfied, 39% were satisfied, and 5% were quite satisfied. So that overall this activity was declared in accordance with the expectations of the participants.
Academic Writing Workshop Series 2: How to Build a Strong Literature Review
On the second day of the workshop, August 15 2023, the postgraduate program raised the topic of how to compile and present a good literature review in a scientific article. The resource person on the second day was Prof. Jaka Sriyana, SE., M.Si, Ph.D (Editor in Chief Economic Journal of Emerging Markets/Professor at the Islamic University of Indonesia) moderated by Dr. Sofyan Rizal, M.Si (Head of Islamic Banking Master Program).
Prof. Jaka explained how to compile a good literature review for writers, namely by describing the development of previous research results, explaining the strengths and weaknesses of the latest research results, building a state of the art of the topic to be researched and declaring the scientific contribution targets of the research to be carried out.
Based on a survey conducted with participants regarding feedback on this activity. 56% of respondents said they were very satisfied, 39% were satisfied, and 5% were quite satisfied. So that overall this activity was declared in accordance with the expectations of the participants.
Academic Writing Workshop Series 1: How to Find Research Gap and Novelty
Graduate Program Faculty of Economic and Business Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University of Jakarta held an academic writing workshop series from August 14 until August 16 2023. This activity was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business. This workshop was held in order to improve and broaden the insights of postgraduate students in the field of writing.
On the first day, presentation of material and discussion by Prof. Doddy Setiawan, SE, M.Si, IMRI, Ph.D (professor of FEB UNS) with moderator Rahmawati, SE., MM., Ph.D (Secretary of Islamic Banking Doctoral Program). The material he conveyed was related to research gaps and novelty. He explained the first way to find research ideas is to determine the field to be studied. Finding ideas can also be through seminal papers, current papers, shortcuts, and calls for papers. For research gaps and novelties, the writer can find gaps in the research area, for example data/result inconsistencies in previous studies. It could be that there are other variables that have been forgotten, so it could be novelty.
The material presented by Prof. Doddy Setiawan received positive responses from postgraduate students. Based on the survey conducted, 72% of participants stated that they were very satisfied, 22% were satisfied, and 6% were quite satisfied.
