BUMDES Umbul Ponggok as a Role Model for Businesses that Improve the Welfare of Rural Communities: Lessons from MBKM Surakarta 2025
Klaten, December 7, 2025. In a small village in the Polanharjo subdistrict of Klaten, there is a Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) that is managed so well that it has been able to improve the welfare of the village community. The village is known as Ponggok Village, a village rich in clear springs that have been packaged into a natural tourist destination that has successfully improved the welfare of the village community.
Umbul Ponggok Tourism Village is managed by BUMDes Tirta Mandiri, which was established in 2010. The abundance of clear water sources has been optimized by the community and the village government by creating clear water bathing pools and adding snorkeling and underwater photoshoot features. Several reports indicate that the village's income through BUMDes has reached tens of billions of rupiah, prompting the village government to launch various village programs, including educational scholarships up to the bachelor's degree level, health insurance, and job creation for the village community.
The Head of MBKM 2025 FEB UIN Jakarta, Arief Fitrijanto, said that Umbul Ponggok is an excellent role model for village businesses to learn from. "The activities at Umbul Ponggok Klaten are not only tourist activities but also foster innovation and creativity for FEB students from various parts of the country to see the business potential of their respective regions. The Umbul Ponggok Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) is an ideal role model for business development that benefits the village community," said Arief Fitrijanto, who is also the Head of the Development Economics Study Program at FEB UIN Jakarta.
Activities at Umbul Ponggok include casual discussions with small traders around the Umbul Ponggok tourist area in Polanharjo, Klaten. (AC)
