Friday Pulpit: Muslim Kamil Delivers Characteristics of Pious People

Jakarta, October 24, 2025. This week's Friday prayer at the FEB Mosque was themed “Characteristics of a Pious Person.” The Friday sermon was delivered by Ust. Dr. Muslim Kamil, MAB., Imam Ust. Rosadi, and the call to prayer was recited by Hasbi. In his sermon, Ust. Kamil outlined the characteristics of the righteous that Muslims must possess.

Given the importance of righteousness, every week—on the blessed day of Friday—the message of righteousness is always conveyed by the preacher to the congregation. Piety is the best provision. So who is considered a pious person? The following are the characteristics of a pious person, especially those found in the Qur'an (Al-Baqarah: 3-4).

1. Belief in the unseen (Al-Baqarah verse 3)

The first characteristic of a pious person is that they believe in the unseen, namely everything that cannot be reached by the five human senses, but whose existence must be believed in. This includes:

- The existence of Allah SWT.
- Heaven and Hell.
- Destiny, etc. This faith becomes the main foundation that makes a person maintain their behavior and obedience.

2. Establishing Prayer (Al-Baqarah verse 3)

It is not merely performing prayer, but establishing prayer. This means performing prayer perfectly, solemnly, fulfilling its pillars and requirements, and maintaining its times. Prayer is a tangible manifestation of the vertical relationship between a servant and his Lord and is the pillar of religion.

3. Spending Part of One's Wealth (Al-Baqarah verse 3)

The pious are those who are willing to spend part of the sustenance that Allah has given them. This spending includes not only material possessions, but also knowledge, energy, time, and all other gifts. Spending is done with sincere intentions for the sake of Allah, without expecting praise from people or hurting the feelings of the recipient.

4. Believing in the Books of Allah (Al-Baqarah verse 4)

They believe in the Qur'an revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, as well as in the books revealed previously, such as the Torah (to the Prophet Moses), the Zabur (to the Prophet David), and the Gospel (to the Prophet Jesus). This shows that they believe in the continuity of the divine message.

5. Belief in the Hereafter (Al-Baqarah verse 4)

The pious have a firm belief in life after death, namely the Day of Judgment, resurrection, reckoning of deeds (hisab), weighing of deeds (mizan), heaven, and hell. This belief motivates them to consistently perform righteous deeds and avoid sin, as preparation for that eternal life.

At the end of his sermon, Ustad Kamil urged the faculty and students attending Friday prayers to continually strengthen their faith and piety toward Allah SWT. (AC)
