IIUM Malaysia Lecturer, Mahbubi Ali Conveys the General Master's Study in Sharia Banking
Jakarta, 20 October 2025. The Sharia Banking Master's Study Program FEB UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a General Studium with the theme “Islamic Banking in Malaysia and Indonesia” by presenting Mahbubi Ali, PhD from IIUM Malaysia. The event, which was packaged online via the zoom application, was opened by the Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs, Sofyan Rizal, who was accompanied by the Head of the Sharia Banking Master's Study Program, Muhajirin.
In his speech, Sofyan Rizal conveyed the significant development of sharia banking in Malaysia. “In recent years Malaysia has succeeded in increasing its sharia banking market share to 42%”, said Sofyan in his speech. In line with Sofyan Rizal, Chair of the Master of Sharia Banking Study Program, Muhajirin said that this general studium activity is a series of activities aimed at broadening sharia banking insight both in Indonesia and Malaysia. “Thank God, we can carry out this activity in order to broaden students' insight regarding sharia banking in both countries, Malaysia and Indonesia. This activity also aims to help students find the theme of their final assignment”, said Muhajirin.
In his presentation, Mahbubi Ali conveyed aspects that show the differences between the conditions of sharia banking in Indonesia and Malaysia, starting from the number of sharia commercial banks, growth rate, market share, to the position of Malaysian and Indonesian sharia banking in the world. “Malaysia has a market share of 42% compared to Indonesia which is still at 7%, while for world ranking Malaysia is ranked 3rd in the world, while Indonesia is ranked 9”th, said this lecturer who is also an international sharia banking practitioner.
After the resource person's presentation, the event was filled with questions and answers guided by the Secretary of the Sharia Banking Master's Study Program, Ady Cahyadi. (AC)
