The Charm of the Lenggang Nyai Dance Opens the FEB UIN Jakarta Graduation Ceremony: A Tangible Expression of Betawi Cultural Preservation
Ciputat, May 19, 2026 – A solemn and proud atmosphere filled the Theater Hall on the 2nd floor of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) building at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta on Tuesday morning, May 19, 2026. The Graduation Ceremony for the 140th Cohort of FEB UIN Jakarta was officially opened with a mesmerizing performance of the Lenggang Nyai Dance, a traditional Betawi dance beautifully performed by female students from the Islamic Banking Program.
Rich in philosophical meaning, the Lenggang Nyai dance successfully captured the attention of the entire audience, including FEB Dean Prof. Dr. Ibnu Qizam, SE., M.Si., Ak., CA., the Vice Deans, the Heads and Secretaries of the Study Programs, as well as the 101 prospective graduates in attendance. The dynamic and agile movements of the dancers, combined with the bright, traditional Betawi-style costumes, provided a burst of positive energy and aesthetic appeal before the sacred main graduation ceremony began.
Historically, the Lenggang Nyai Dance is a monumental choreographic work by the legendary artist Bagong Kussudiardja, inspired by the Betawi folk tale of Nyai Dasima. This dance portrays the character of Betawi women as intelligent, agile, brave, and decisive in making life choices to fight for their freedom and rights. These characteristics are considered highly relevant to the spirit of the graduating students, who are ready to step into the professional world and society.
The Chair of the Organizing Committee for the 140th Graduation Ceremony, Dr. Ade Ananto, MM, stated in his remarks that the inclusion of this traditional dance is not merely ceremonial entertainment, but rather a cultural mission integrated into the academic environment.
“The performance of the ‘Tari Lenggang Nyai’ by students from the Islamic Banking Program is part of our concrete commitment to preserving Betawi customs and culture, within which the UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta campus has grown and been established. As an educational institution, we have a moral responsibility to ensure that the values of local wisdom remain alive and sustainable in the hearts of the younger generation, particularly the graduates of the Faculty of Economics and Business,” said Dr. Ade Ananto.
Furthermore, Dr. Ade Ananto also expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude for the hard work of all parties involved in making this event a success. In particular, he highly commended the synergy among the students who supported the cultural performance.
“We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the cooperation and extraordinary dedication of everyone involved, especially the students of the Islamic Banking Study Program Student Association (HMPS). Thanks to their teamwork and enthusiasm, the opening ceremony of this graduation ceremony was a magnificent and proud occasion,” added Ade Ananto.
This 140th Graduation Ceremony serves as a send-off for 101 FEB graduates who are scheduled to participate in the university’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at the Harun Nasution Main Auditorium. This culturally-based opening ceremony underscores the vision of the FEB UIN Jakarta, which is not only to produce outstanding intellectuals in the fields of economics and business but also to nurture graduates who remain deeply rooted in the traditional values and national identity of the nation.
