Visiting Professor of Islamic Economics Study Program: Transforming Data into Narrative with Prof. Dr. Razali Haron
Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the Islamic Economics Study Program, FEB UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a Visiting Professor activity by presenting Prof. Dr. Razali Haron, Deputy Dean of IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIBF) Malaysia. This event took place in the Computer Laboratory, 3rd floor, FEB UIN Jakarta, from 13.00 to 15.00 WIB, and was attended by 7th semester students of the Islamic Economics Study Program.
Prof. Razali Haron provided very relevant material for students who will soon enter the thesis writing stage. He emphasized the importance of choosing software that is in accordance with the data structure used in the research. Several important points conveyed in the session include:
• Number is Numeric: Numeric data is the main basis in various statistical software.
• Different Structures, Different Software: Survey data is more suitable for analysis using SPSS, time series with EViews, and panel data using STATA.
• Software Specialization: Although all software can be used for research, each software has its own specialization.
• Research Data Source: One of the recommended data sources is the investing.com website. Data can be accessed through the "Markets" menu to search for macro, micro, or specific commodity data.
• The Importance of Regression: "Regression is a story about relationships," said Prof. Razali, explaining that regression is used to analyze the relationship between variables in research.
• STATA and Numerical Data: STATA only accepts data in numeric format. If there are letters in the data, they will be marked in red in the software.
Ali Rama, PhD, as Head of the Sharia Economics Study Program, said that the presence of Prof. Razali Haron aims to provide understanding and share experiences with students, especially in transforming data into narratives ("from data to narrative"). "This Visiting Professor activity is expected to help 7th semester students in preparing their theses better," said Ali Rama.
This activity is part of a series of activities by FEB UIN Jakarta in presenting leading international academics. In addition to giving lectures, Prof. Razali Haron will also guide research for lecturers and students, receive consultations related to research, and fill workshops on curriculum evaluation and international benchmarking. His presence is expected to improve academic quality and broaden international insight for the academic community of FEB UIN Jakarta.(ar)
